Who we are
HammerCross is a youth cycling club in the Chapel Hill and Carrboro area. We started with cyclocross, where kids race short, muddy, obstacle-filled laps on autumn weekends. Along the way we noticed that kids who fell in love with riding didn’t want to stop when the season ended. So we added KOBRA (Kids On Bikes Riding Around), mountain bike rides that keep kids on their bikes through the spring and summer. KOBRA rides began as informal group rides open to anyone, and they’ve grown into one of our most popular programs. Today we run cyclocross, three KOBRA mountain bike programs, KOBRA High School, and First Flight, our development team for riders ready to race at a national level. [Add founding year and one or two milestones.]
Run by volunteers
There are no paid staff at HammerCross. Everything you see here is run by volunteers: parents, riders, and cycling-loving neighbors who believe every kid should have a place to ride.
Who they are: coaches, ride leaders, board members, and parents who show up on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings. Some have raced for years, and some learned alongside their kids.
What they do:
Lead rides and coach practices
Set up courses and obstacles
Run races, camping trips and Try It Out Days
Handle registration, communications and finances
Cheer for every kid at the finish line, whether first or last
Why it matters: because our time is donated, our costs stay low. KOBRA Kids is free. KOBRA Social and Adventure are $75 for a whole season, and that fee is waived when a parent volunteers. If money is tight, any family can choose the waiver, no questions asked. We don’t want the fee to be the reason a kid misses out.
It also makes us a community. Kids see adults giving their time for something they care about, parents ride alongside their kids, and new families get a friendly guide through a sport that can look intimidating from the outside.
Everyone is welcome
We want everyone to be themselves when they ride. You are welcome here regardless of gender identity, sexual orientation, immigration status, race, culture or socioeconomic status.
Volunteer with us
You don’t need to be a racer, a mechanic, or a mountain biker. If you can ride a bike, hold a stopwatch, bring snacks, drive a carpool, or just show up with good energy, we have a spot for you.
